Thursday, November 09, 2006 . E-learning

For those of you who think that e-learning is boring, there is more on the way. Starting from 2007/2008, all first year students will have to own a portable computing device, meaning a notebook or tablet. This probably means that SALC and other computer rooms will slowly be phased out. Right now, staff are urged to start thinking of ways to make use of such a development. For example, how should the curriculum be adjusted to allow students to do decentralised learning?

In fact, by 2010, ALL modules need to have at least 20% of the syllabus under decentralised learning. Officially, decentralised learning means the class can be split into small groups at different locations on campus for the same time slot while the lecturer facilitates in one location. Sounds vague? It sure does.

Anyway, e-learning is here to stay and it can only become more prevalent in the future.
